French Antique Set Of Drawers

$850.00

This French 19th century set of drawers is very impressive. Made from kingwood, a classic furniture wood almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. It was the most expensive wood used in furniture making in the 17th century, when it was known as 'princes wood'. Knigwood comes from a small restricted area in Brazil. This chest of drawers has a white marble top and what appears to be five drawers, but on closer inspection, two of the drawers are false, revealing a marble lined pot cupboard.

Pot cupboards were early bedside cabinets used to hold a chamber potbefore indoor plumbing was available. They also held the night time candle. Because they were displayed in the master bedroom, they were fine pieces offurniture. They were in use in France in the late 17th century. Most had marble tops and many were fitted with drawers or doors.

The height of the drawers is 96 cms, the length is 36 cms and the width is 41 cms.
