Antique Royal Doulton Lidded Milk Jug

$180.00

This elegant milk jug by Royal Doulton Burslem has a silver plate mounted lid. The earthenware jug has been decorated in a botanical design with blue and gold on a white background. Underneath, the jug carries the Royal Doulton maker’s mark. This indicates the jug was made between 1891 and 1902.

Royal Doulton was created in 1815 by John Doulton, Martha Jones and John Watts. It traded as Jones, Watts and Doulton. From the beginning it made functional stoneware. They specialised in making salt glazed stoneware such as bottles, jugs, tankards and jars for inns. Later they went on to make drain pipes, lavatories, water filters and electrical parts made from porcelain. From 1853 to 1901 wares were marked ‘Doulton and Co.’ In the 1860s, Henry Doulton became interested in creating artistic wares. In 1901, the company was given a ‘royal warrant’. This was awarded to those who supplied goods or services to a royal court. A royal warrant held great prestige. From then on, the company became known as Royal Doulton.

This lovely milk jug is in excellent condition considering its age. It is 15 cms in height not including the small handle on top. It measures approximately 16 cms across including the handle.
