French Antique Opaline Night Carafe

$195.00

This 19th century French opaline night cafe is a vivid shade of blue with gilded trim. Comprising a carafe and stand, both made in opaline glass, it is indeed a rare find!

Sometimes referred to as a night servant, the night carafe gained popularity during the Belle Epoche era (1871 - 1914). Belle Epoche literally means ‘beautiful age’ in French. The bedside water carafe was specifically used on a bedside table to serve water.

Opaline glass is coloured glass that is semi opaque. It was made to resemble porcelain using bone ash and metal oxides. In the 19th century opaline glass was made using free blowing techniques. Hand blown glass should have no seam marks. In France, opaline glass reached its height in popularity in the mid to late 1800s.

When on its stand, this opaline carafe stands approximately 27 cms in height. The stand itself is 9 cms in height and 17 cms in diameter. The carafe is 20 cms in height. This night carafe is in very good condition apart from a little age related wear and tear to the gilding.
