Rare And Elegant Silver Goblet
This beautiful old silver goblet has many stories to tell. Made from quality silver, most likely over brass, it has an elegant botanical design pressed into it. Fine detail is also etched into the outer rim of the base. Closer examination reveals evidence that this gorgeous goblet has been hand beaten. This is especially noticable when the goblet is upended to reveal a base that is not perfectly circular, but rather, authentically rustic in nature. The upper and lower sections have been expertly joined using fine soldering. The goblet reveals an interesting story when the maker’s mark is examined. The mark depicts a hand holding a hammer surrounded by what appears to be arabic writing. However, next to the image the word ‘depose’ can be seen. This French word is commonly used to signify a design patent. So, we have a French connection!
After the French conquest of Morocco and the signing of the Treaty of Fez in 1907, France went on to establish a French Protectorate from 1912 until 1956. This resulted in a strong French influence in Morocco which is still present today. Indeed, French remains Morocco’s unofficial second language.
This artistic silver goblet is approximately 15 cms in height and the top is 10 cms in diameter. What a wonderful gift this would make for someone celebrating a milestone occasion. This fine goblet could bring with it a rich history, ready to join onto a new story in the making. Or maybe it just needs to sit somewhere special at your place.
