Striking Mid Century French Vallauris Vase

$110.00

This stunning yellow, black and white vase features sgraffito and brush work decoration. It has been constructed in such a way that its shape changes when viewed from different perspectives. Acute attention has been payed to line and angle, producing results that will amaze! The vase is signed ‘Vallauris M I F’ at the base.

Vallauris is sometimes referred to as the centre for pottery on the French Riviera. Pablo Picasso lived in Vallauris from 1948 until 1955. He took up residence in the La Galloise Villa and a year later he rented a studio in a former fragrance factory in Le Fournas. Picasso’s presence in Vallauris attracted many artists wanting to learn techniques around the art of ceramics. Other renowned artists from this region include Roger Capron, Roger Collet, Gilbert Portainier, Jean Derval and Charles Voltz.

This beautiful French vase features sgraffito (in Italian meaning ‘to scratch’). It is a technique where potters can apply layers of colour (underglazes) to leather hard pottery. Parts of the layers are then scratched off to create contrasting images and patterns.

The vase was created during the mid century modern era, sometimes referred to as retro vintage. This style had a focus on function. Within a background of modernist minimalism, it featured simple clean lines. There was an emphasis on warmth in colour with bold spurts of bright hues and crazy patterns featured on items such as homewares and wallpaper.

This vase is approximately 24 cms in height. It is in excellent condition. If you are a lover of the mid century modern era, this vase is for you.
